Civil Rights Act of 1968 is adopted in Washington, D.C.

Signed by President Lyndon Johnson, the law includes the Fair Housing Act. Co-authored by Sen. Ed Brooke (R-Mass.), it outlaws the use of racial covenants in real estate transactions and prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental, or financing of housing on the basis of race, color, nationality, religion, sex, familial status, and disability.
